Sycamore tree Project

Sycamore Tree is a volunteer-led programme that teaches the principles of restorative justice. The programme is run in Irish prisons in groups of up to 20 learners, over a 6-week period. During the 6 weeks the course explores the effects of crime on victims, offenders, and the wider community.  

Sycamore Tree is an accredited programme that has proven to change attitudes that contribute to reducing reoffending. The content of the programme is consistent with the seven pathways of rehabilitation and prevention of reoffending.

Sycamore Tree provides a supportive group-based learning environment, connection with the community and is a highly economic structure.  Therefore the course holds a highly favourable endorsements for participants, staff and all stakeholders.

Consider volunteering as a group facilitator.

Group Facilitator Role:

  • Assist the tutor in delivering the course

  • Facilitate small group discussions             

  • Have an understanding of the learners journey through the material

  • Complete post programme reports each week to track the learners progress.

Consider volunteering as a Tutor.

Tutor Role:

  • Run the six-week restorative justice course in prison for up to 20 prisoners

  • Prepare and deliver the course material provided

  • Assess group workbooks with facilitators

  • Support and lead existing group facilitators
